Research Interests
· Develop synthetic methods for benzoxazole derivatives, and to investigate the excitaed-state intramolecular proton transfer.
· Develop molecular probes that emit in near infrared region (700-1000 nm) for fluorescent imaging applications.
· Design and synthesis of novel chemical probes for biologically important species including metal cations (e.g. Zn 2+ and Cu + ), anions (e.g. ATP, phosphates), and proteins.
· Design and synthesis of novel p-conjugated materials with high luminescence; Seeking hybrid materials which combine the optical stability and performance of both inorganic and organic materials.
· Modification of the polymer chain rigidity for biomedical applications, such as artificial muscle and drug delivery; Development of new polymeric fluorescent materials with reversible gelation properties.
· Correlation between the chain microstructures and physical properties of polymers; Seeking specific interaction to isolate single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) of unique chirality.
· Elucidation of electronic band structures of p-conjugated molecules for fundamental understanding and potential laser applications.
· Developing new polymeric materials from renewable furan-based monomers.

Title: An introduction to nanoscience and technology
Prof. Minghua Liu graduated from Nanjing University in 1986. During the master course in Nanjing University, he was selected as one of the students to study in Japan by Ministry of Education in 1988. In 1994 he received his Ph.D. from Saitama University, Japan. After doing postdoctoral research in Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) and Tokyo University of Agriculture and Industry (1994-1998), he joined the Institute of Photographic Chemistry, in 1998 and then Institute of Chemistry, CAS from 1999 till now. From the June of 2013, he has served as the Director of National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, China.
His research interests cover the supramolecular chemistry, nanoscience and technology, self-assembly and the gel-based soft nanomaterials. He served as the international advisory board of several journals like Soft Matter, Langmuir, Advanced Science, Nanoscale Horizons, and Chirality. He has published more than 300 papers in international peer reviewed journals such as Chem. Rev, Chem. Soc. Rev., J.Am. Chem. Soc. Angew Chem. Eng Ed.; Nat. Commun. ACS Nano and so on..
