主持完成或正在研究的科研项目有国家自然科学基金、国际合作项目、河南省科技厅杰出人才创新基金项目、河南省自然科学基金项目等多项研究课题,发表学术论文260余篇和发明专利10余项,师从莱乌托夫院士,研究了饱和碳原子上的均裂与亲电取代反应机理,取得重要理论成果,主要证明脂肪族SE2与SN2反应不同,其立体化学构型保持,得到国际同行公认。自20世纪60年代迄今,系统地研究了芳基汞化合物的性质,主要证明在芳基汞化合物分子中,带有p-或π-电子的邻位取代基可与汞原子配位,这种分子内配位对汞有机化合物的反应活性、波谱性质有明显影响,在邻位效应理论中增添了新的内容。自90年代迄今研究了环金属化反应、金属转移反应及有关立体化学,以及钯催化偶联反应,取得系统的有重要理论意义与应用前景的研究成果,《环金属化反应与分子内配位》获2002年河南省科学技术进步壹等奖。自80年代从事大环化学研究,取得系列创新性研究成果,《冠醚合成新方法》获1984年国家发明三等奖。以上研究证明在有机化合物分子内、分子间存在有弱相互作用,阐明了其作用规律,丰富了近代化学键理论。70年代完成国务院下达的重大科技攻关项目《萘氯化、水解法制甲萘酚》,获1978年全国科学大会奖,并授予他“在中国科学技术工作中做出重大贡献的先进科技工作者”奖状。吴养洁长期工作在郑州大学化学系的教学科研第一线,由于工作出色,曾获“五一”劳动奖章、“全国优秀教育工作者”、“全国先进工作者”、“河南省科技功臣”等荣誉称号。
